My experience at this hospital can only be one of praise, admiration and the best attention anyone could wish for when arriving from the UK on a weeks holiday! I spent six hours being seen by various nurses within the Eye Clinic who were all highly professional and all did their best to put me at ease. Unfortunately I had to have surgery the following day at another Cork hospital owing to the Surgeon's diary who were equally professional.

This hospital is one of least patient friendly facilities I have spent time in during an illness. I have had better service provided and more organization in most third world countries.

The blood taking protocols are either non existent or not followed. Hospital personnel did not use ppe in drawing blood from me. Blood on needles was placed on working surfaces. And, viles of blood were not marked prior to drawing blood.

The hospital's cleanliness standards seem to be low. There are janitorial staff on the floors however they do not meet what would be considered best practices for keeping a medical facility spotless.

I had the misfortune of spending two nights in the emergency room. On the first night I arrived at 10pm I was admitted over a four hour period. It was 20 hours before a diagnosis was made.

Blood samples X-rays and an ultra sound were done over that twenty hour period. To arrive at a very basic diagnostic. This would be unacceptable at best in any other modern facility.

I was told I would most likely need to spend a second night. I was looking forward to getting out of the EM. There was maintenance taking place in the corridor adjacent to the patience on gurneys. I complained to the nurse at my station. Telling her I found it hard to believe that the work was being done without dust controls. That the administrator would allow such a practice.

I was told that there should be controls but the contractor did not have any any. But the work needed to be done.

I was incredulous when I found no rooms were available. If one did become available I would be moved.

The mid night staff had no respect for the patients need to sleep. Understanding that the shift must preform their duties, they acted like it was the day shift. They were loud and boisterous well beyond the level required to do the work of the shift. Finally at 3:30 I went to ask the EM shift supervisor if she might ask the staff to keep it to a low roar. She simply said no.

It is bad enough having to spend the night in an active corridor that alone would cause a sleepless night but the loud talking and at times yelling is detrimental to healing.

The shift supervisor suggested perhaps a room will be available the following night. I assured her I would not be spending another night in this facility.

As a guest in Ireland I am shocked at the findings. Cork being the second largest city in the Republic I can only imagine what the other hospitals might be like.
